‘Tron’ dance party? Rev up your Light Cycle for a trip west
Sat, 07 Aug 2010

Sure, here in Florida we’ve got a Tron-themed monorail at Walt Disney World’s “highway in the sky” that runs from the Ticket and Transportation Center to Epcot and back. And you probably can pick up the original “Tron” on DVD at Downtown Disney.

But look at what’s planned for later this year on the West Coast: a “Tron Legacy”-themed nighttime dance party at Disney California Adventure.

According to a post on The Los Angeles Times travel site, the party will feature a sci-fi theme, dancing and adult beverages this fall. Called “ElecTRONica,” (sometimes they just write themselves, don’t they?) the event will run through the Christmas holiday, and it will replace the Glow Fest dance party that ends at that park later this month.

There’s speculation that, should the event prove popular (and isn’t that what Disney’s big-money marketing machine guarantees?), it might even take up a longer residence at DCA or other parks, such as Disneyland near that park’s iconic Space Mountain.

So, Mr. Flynn, will Disney’s Orlando parks get the same event?

There’s no evidence of that now, but one has to wonder if it could become a reality, given how Disney is going all-out to promote the upcoming film and the fact that Walt Disney World has its own Glow Fest-like celebration at Hollywood Studios. The “Rock ‘n’ Glow dance party is part of the Summer Nightastic line-up, but it, too, will come to an end soon. With “Tron Legacy” coming to the big screens in December, surely Disney will promote the film at the Orlando parks just as enthusiastically as they will at the West Coast operations and elsewhere.

So, if the Orlando parks do promote the film in similar ways as they will be doing at DCA, where might a possible event be held? Hollywood Studios is a natural tie-in for any film event like this, of course, but so, too, is Space Mountain for this particular flick. (Just don’t expect the adult beverages to go along with any rave-like dance party that might be held there.)

This is all just idle speculation and sci-fi daydreaming, of course. Who knows? Given the way there was some bitter comments from disgruntled monorail purists after the “Tron Legacy” marketing appeared here, maybe WDW won’t change a thing here in Florida and will just let the film’s popularity rely on word of mouth and the assessments of film critics.

If you believe that, you probably believe the ENCOM mainframe computer system will be used only for peaceful purposes, don’t you?
