Disney Cruise: Fireworks, Pirates party add to fun aboard Disney Magic Wed, 11 Aug 2010
Mickey flies in to save the day after a pirate "attack."
(Theme Park Ranger Matt Palm is beating the end-of-summer blues by reminiscing about his Disney Cruise Line voyage in the Mediterranean earlier this year.)
Disney Cruise Line gets a lot of attention for being the only cruise line to offer fireworks off the side of its ships. Is all the fuss worth it? You bet.
Now, I’ll admit to a bias: I’m a “fireworks person.” I’m generally entranced by any fireworks show. But those in my group who said they were not so interested in fireworks got into the spirit of the display off the Disney Magic.
The Disney Cruise Line cast teaches dance moves to the crowd.
The pyrotechnics certainly inspired romantic fireworks as I saw a lot of cuddling going on during the show.
The fireworks serve as a finale to the cruise’s big deck party, called “Pirates in the Caribbean.” Yes, this makes no sense when you’re in the Mediterranean, and if Disney plans to stick with regular Med cruises, they may want to re-brand it slightly. I suppose, though, it was more convenient to keep the name as it was preprinted on the souvenir pirate bandannas given out.
The party was fun, like most deck parties full of loud dance music. Characters danced with the kids. The Disney Cruise Line cast added a lot to the proceedings, full of energy as always. My group was especially friendly with chipper Alex and irrepressible Lindsay.
Pirate Dale joins in the fun.
They were among the cast teaching dances to the partygoers — you know, the Macarena, boyband line dancing, the sort of thing that if you stop and think about it, you feel like a nerd — but if you just relax and do it with everyone else, you have a great time.
The climax of the evening is when Mickey makes a grand entrance down a zip-line to save everyone from the scurvy pirates. And then come the fireworks to cap it all off.
