High-energy dance festival Disney Step Classic begins today

 Ladies of Distinction from Miramar High School in Miramar, Fla., perform at the 2009 Disney STEP Classic. Head Coach Catherine R. Powell said, "It provides a great opportunity to meet other teams and see what is being done in other parts of the country, as well as to compete in a large venue." (Walt Disney World) Fancy footwork is on display this weekend at Walt Disney World when the Disney STEP Classic returns for its third year.
Today, the dance teams are participating in workshops taught by performance judges who are also National STEP Show Alliance certified STEP coaches. The workshops are geared for all levels of proficiency — from beginning enthusiasts to experienced steppers — and will offer performance feedback. This is the first year compulsory moves have been added to the competition.
On Saturday, teams will go toe to toe on stage at the Premiere Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. There are two divisions: one for community centers and middle/high school teams (participants up to age 19) and the other for community colleges, club teams and Greek organizations (ages 18 and older).
Guests visiting Hollywood Studios are welcome to take a break and view the competitions as space allows in the theater. Winners are invited to perform at the pre-game show of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference-Southwestern Athletic Conference game Sunday at Orlando’s Citrus Bowl.

** Mighty Saint Steppers, Rocky Mount, N.C.
** Anonymous Steppers, Rocky Mount, N.C.
** The Dynasty, North Augusta, S.C.
** Louisville All Stars, Louisville, Ky.
** Bratz-In-Harmony, Ft. Pierce, Fla.
** Kings of Queens, Fort Pierce, Fla.
** Million Dollar Steppers, Clearwater, Fla.
** Houston County Silver Steppers, Warner Robins, Ga.
The awards ceremony also will take place at the Premiere Theater after the competition. Awards include a Disney STEP classic trophy and cash prizes.
